  • Remember for Trauma, we do a head-to-toe exam and for medical, we do a focused exam

  • Example of a focused exam-c/o abdominal pain (OPQRST)-onset, provoked, quality, radiate, severity, time-Do you have any N.V? any diarrhea? any fever?




Scene Size up

  • Scene safety/BSI

  • NOI vs MOI-Nature of illness vs Mechanism of injury

  • Number of patients

  • Consider the need for additional resources

  • C-Spine (Manual)



Primary Exam

  • Verbalize general impression

  • Establish responsive/LOC-Level of Consciousness-AOx4

  • Chief complaint

  • Manage any life threats (Active bleeding)

  • Airway (Open/Patent)-gurgling, blood, vomit, mucous-Suction

  • Breathing-chest r/f, skin signs, accessory muscles, speaking in complete sentences (place oxygen, PPV-BVM)

  • Circulation-skin signs, cap refill, pulse (Treat for shock)

  • Transport decision




Secondary Exam

  • SAMPLE History-Signs/symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Pertinent hx, Last oral intake, events leading up

  • Head to toe exam for Trauma

  • OPQRST & Focused exam for Medical

  • Full set of vital signs

  • Manage any injuries (Splints, bandaging, etc)

  • Any appropriate medical treatment





DCAP-BTLS

  • Deformities

  • Contusions

  • Abrasions

  • Penetrations

  • Burns

  • Trauma

  • Lacerations

  • Swelling


Cardiac-Chest pain

  • Any SOB?

  • Any N/V?

  • Any Syncope?-passed out

  • Any Dizziness or weakness


EMT Meds

  • Aspirin-for Chest pain

  • Nitro up to 3 sprays

  • oxygen

  • Epi pen

  • Oral Glucose

  • Albuterol
